DOCRRA Rejects Rates Increase: Our Submissions on the 2025/2026 KDM Budget

Save the Date! Join us on Thursday 24 April 2025 at 18h00 to add your voice to the objection at the Mayoral IDP/Budget Imbizo at Umhlali Prep School.

The DOCRRA Finance Subcommittee, chaired by Brian Botes, has been hard at work analysing the draft KDM budget for the coming financial year and we will be submitting a written objection to the rates increase, as well as other comments and suggestions, as we do every year.

The one positive thing about this budget, is that KDM have decided to keep the randage the same, but rather reduce the rebate.  This will improve KwaDukuza’s appeal to investors and is something that we have been campaigning for, for 3 years.  This, however, is where the positivity ends.

When examining the figures closely, it becomes clear that KDM have tried to sneak through a whopping 9.33% rates increase – this, at a time when service delivery and trust between the residents and the municipality, are at an all-time low.  Coupled with other increases in VAT, water and sewerage charges, and the increasing cost of living – high rates collection in KDM could become a thing of the past.

DOCRRA stands firm in our refusal to subsidize electricity losses which are expected to balloon to R400 million this year.  By reducing those losses by just 6.5% (R26 million), the rates increase could be reduced to a far more reasonable 5.33%.
