Coinciding with International Food Week, the Dolphin Coast Outreach (DCO) proudly marks its fourth anniversary, boasting remarkable growth and a profound impact on neighbouring communities. Founded on a simple yet powerful premise, DCO has evolved into a thriving volunteer initiative, serving approximately 10,000 nutritious soup portions monthly. Volunteers from up and down the Dolphin Coast cook up delicious, homemade soup which is paired with a starch to provide a nutritious and healthy meal. This impressive feat is augmented by the organization’s support of nine local soup kitchens.
This year, DCO extended its reach to three schools, partnering with Hodari Foods to provide fortified soup for primary school children. This strategic collaboration underscores the organization’s commitment to nurturing the next generation. DCO has also surpassed an extraordinary milestone, having served over 250,000 meals in just four years. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and generosity of its sponsors, donors and volunteers. At the heart of DCO’s mission remains its unwavering support for the 109 children at the Thembeni orphanage. The organization’s carefully prepared, homemade soup, served in smaller containers, continues to bring comfort and sustenance to those in need.
Beyond food, DCO receives an outpouring of donations, including repurposed clothes, books and toys. “We are often overwhelmed by the generosity,” remarks Megan Viljoen.
