Electricity Crisis Update: Our Complaint to NERSA and Other Interventions

The DOCRRA Team has been hard at work this week putting together several of the important pieces of our strategy to tackle the electricity crisis:

  1. An official complaint to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), with a request for a complete audit to ensure that KwaDukuza Municipality is fulfilling the responsibilities that come with its license. Our official complaint is available here and the letter detailing our requests is accessible here.

  1. Correspondence has also been sent to the MEC for COGTA, Rev. Buthelezi, requesting municipal oversight to restore functionality of municipal structures, communication between KDM and its residents and accountability of our appointed and elected officials.
  1. PAIA requests have also been sent to KDM seeking the following:
  • a complete log of faults on the Southern Grid from 1 December to present, with causes and the repair measures that were taken,
  • a list of vacancies in the electricity business unit and a list of current staff members and their qualifications,
  • a log of all electrical maintenance works and upgrades,
  • an asset register and schematic for the Southern Grid with the status of those assets, and
  • copies of all independent audits done on the KDM electrical infrastructure in the last ten years and their responses to those audits.

DOCRRA is also undertaking key stakeholder engagements today, Friday, and into next week, to ensure that our response draws on all available resources and represents a united front of concerned residents.  We will continue to publish all relevant information and updates on our website and social media platforms.
