AN IRON FIST WITH A SOFT HEART: The Dolphin Coast Steps Up to Care for Those In Need

Two weeks ago our neighbourhood watches, security companies, and a small army of volunteers got organised and protected the Dolphin Coast community and businesses in an incredible show of unity and strength.  But along with an “iron fist”, our community has an incredible heart of compassion for those in need.

Over the past week, charitable organisations across the Dolphin Coast have rallied to serve and support like never before. The Dolphin Coast Outreach (DCO), the charitable arm of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA), could expand and leverage their network of active citizens and sponsors to increase its soup production four-fold. Soup production increased from 200 to 800 litres, which was delivered to the most needy in our neighbouring communities by Friday afternoon. In addition, a sponsorship of 2 tons of meat, maize and vegetables was received from various partner organisations which is conservatively valued at approximately R 55,000.

One and a half tons of the produce was distributed to our volunteer soup makers on Saturday, which have increased in number from 40 to 50.  By Sunday evening, 200 litres of nutritious soup, and cooked food, was already stored in freezers and ready for distribution. This amount will double by Wednesday, and all will be distributed to our partner beneficiaries by Friday. All of this equates to approximately 5,000 meal portions over a two-week period, representing a three-fold increase from normal production.
