In just a few days, South Africa will begin its fourth post-democracy census and its first ever digital census, which was postponed from October 2021 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The census is a vital tool for government, civil society and other stakeholders to be able to implement policy based on evidence-based data, which was highlighted by the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Ms. Thembi Siweya in a media statement last week. This will represent the first time that the census is carried out using uniquely digital equipment by 165,000 field workers who will be working throughout the country.
However, households may register online for online or telephonic data collection on getcounted.statssa.gov.za, by Saturday, 5 February 2022. Face to face fieldworker visits will begin on Thursday, 3 February 2022. The rollout will be until 28 February 2022.
Field workers will be identifiable by way of green bibs and caps and a StatsSA ID card, which will have the field workers photo, name, and unique code with the district they have been assigned to – all branded with Census 2022/ Stats SA
