Dolphin Coast Outreach: Still Going Strong…

International Food Week started on Monday the 16th October 2023 and prompted DOCCRA to take stock of its Dolphin Cost Outreach (DCO) program.

Although still primarily a nutritious home cooked soup program, the initiative has expanded substantially. DCO sometimes receive linen from hotels that can be repurposed, clothes and sporting equipment, starches in various forms, bread, canned goods, and more. Recently, we were entrusted with 900 pairs of school shoes from Bata and Spar, which has been distributed to those in need at 6 local primary schools. DCO distributes regularly between 1500 litres – 2000 litres of soup a month, which represents over 6500 meals.

The charities that are supported are west of the N2, from soup kitchens in Frasers in the South, various churches in Driefontein, the Nkobongo Noah centre, the Goggo Ash Saint Vincent De Paul centre in section C in Nkobongo, and the Thembeni Orphanages in the North where there are 20 homes with 109 children. Soup and food are also distributed to victims of floods and other disasters on the Dolphin Coast.

None of this would be possible without the tireless support of our soup-makers who continue to churn out dozens of litres of delicious and nutritious soup that is made with love every week. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to them, as well as our beneficiary partners, and especially to Peter Walker and his team at The Good Food Guys. When we work together towards a common goal, we can truly accomplish amazing things.

The DCO outreach initiative strengthens the collaboration between those that “have” and those that “have not” communities and builds relationships. Please reach out to us, as your discarded item may be a Godsend for someone else. If we cannot use it, we are sure to find an organisation that does.

Soup is collected weekly on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-10:00 AM in the underground parking area of Tiffany’s shopping area and coordinated via a dedicated WhatsApp group. Alternate arrangements can also be made should this time not be suitable.
