Fed Up? Time to SHOW Up!

The 2024 National and Provincial Election is fast approaching – are you ready to have your say?

Although the exact date has not been announced yet, the upcoming 2024 elections will be upon us before we know it – and time is running out to register if you haven’t done so already. Predicted to be set between May and August of 2024, once the election date is announced, registration will CLOSE which is why registering now is more important than ever

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Check your registration status now by sending your ID number to 32810
  • Register to vote online by visiting https://registertovote.elections.org.za/Welcome
  • Refer to video below for instructions on how to register online.
  • For those who prefer to register in person, the second and final IEC registration weekend will take place on 3-4 February from 8 AM to 5 PM at all voting stations

In KZN, despite a population of almost 13 million people, only 5,587,047 voters are registered – representing only 60% of eligible voters! In some wards on the Dolphin Coast, less than 4,000 voters are registered!

Whilst we often complain that corruption is the cause of so many failings in our government, we have little room to talk when so few of us participate in our elections.  Voter fatigue and disillusionment have grown, and people feel very little connection or interaction with their elected and appointed officials. But now is a time for change and many analysts believe that this election will be one of the most important since 1994

South Africans are fed up with dealing with load shedding because of the energy crisis and many areas face intermittent water supply as well.  High levels of unemployment, particularly with our youth (over 60%!) and slow economic growth despite being the most industrialized country on the continent are also issues that voters will be contemplating when they go to the polls.

All of these concerns as well as the increase in crime and corruption are set to make the 2024 election one of the most fiercely competitive since the beginning of democracy in South Africa.  Although no one can say for sure what the outcome will be, it is becoming clear that cooperation between various political parties will play a key role in the future of governance.  If we are to truly live the spirit of Ubuntu, showing up for one another and our children at the ballot box is non-negotiable. Check your registration status, get registered and have your say about the future of South Africa – or let someone else decide for you.  The future is in your hands.
